Artist’s Statement

Being a child of the 1950’s – I developed an interest in art, going to secondary school during the 1960’s, growing up in a country town of both urban and rural farming environments. A large influence was having an intensive art education during secondary school and later, when attending a tertiary art institute which focused on learning different skills and tehniques that could be appied to any art or craft form. We were encouraged to look and observe objects as well as interepret the subject matter.

To draw using the elements and principals of design such as line, tone, shape, colour and form were intregal necessary skills developed at that time.

These are the critical skills that I base all my drawing and printmaking pratice on therefore reflecting the underlying outcome I want to achieve in my work. These skills, could also now be considered a lost art.

The subject matter of my drawing is an interpretation of what I see – an almond orchard, a still-life of atichoke flowers or an arrangement of pomegranates. I endevour to capture the essence of the object – creating a sense of reality through the self expression of line, tone, texture and colour – trying to capture the nature and feeling of the object. For example, whether it’s soft or hard or through the use of line and colour, capture a specific texture or form.

My inspiration is drawn from natural objects, the natural environment and landscape.

I am also inspired by many Artists, past and present – in particular drawings by Paul Klee, Picasso and Modigliani and the works of Joy Hester, Margaret Preston, Georgia O’Keefe and Mirka Mora who through their undestanding of the creative process and their personal aethetic, developed works of an individual nature.
