Artist Statement
I am inspired by the natural world and the immediate world that surrounds me. Marine life, animals, butterflies, birds, interiors of rooms, trees and places where I have lived are all a part of my artistic repertoire.
I have been working with two techniques, intaglio and relief printing. The word Intaglio is derived from the Italian word intaglione meaning to engrave or cut. The process is to transfer a drawing onto a metal surface, it is then either engraved or corroded in an acid bath after which ink is rubbed into the surface and then printed. I find the raw, black, raised lines incredibly beautiful. It’s an art form which has been practised since the 15th Century so there is something fascinatingly enduring about it.
Relief Prints are quite different. The surface is flat and the lines are broad and bold. These have been created by carving into linoleum, rolling ink over the surface and then printing. I use a press rather than rubbing by hand as I like the slightly embossed impression.
Since graduating from RMIT and Monash University in 1992 I have worked as a practising sculptor, printmaker and art educator. My work has been exhibited widely in commercial and regional galleries in Victoria and interstate and is included in museum, corporate and private collections. Significant Public Art commissions include; Melbourne City Council, Wind Contrivance, 1995; City of Boroondara, 4 Large Wood Carvings, 1997; Albury Wodonga Development Corporation, Feather and Leaf, 2004; Hobsons Bay City Council, Seaborn, 2005; as well as being shortlisted for six other public art projects taken through to the design stage. In 2007 I completed a Master of Fine art at Monash University.
